Introduction to Glitch 2

This was one of the first plugins I ever bought back when I started doing music production seriously. In recent years I've not used it as much however I stumbled upon my license in an email while searching for something else and thought I'd give it another go. I'm glad I did, this is a great utility for adding some interesting licks to a mix. It works well for inspiration too.

Getting Started

The setup of Glitch 2 is a simple one to master. Once installed you need to drop the plugin on the track you want to have the effect on and let it do its job. The plugin opens up with a selection of effects all lined up. This can be a little chaotic so I suggest hitting the "init" button which will clear all effects down. From there you can pick an effect and draw on when you want it to fire.

Notable Features in the list

  • Tape Stop effect
  • Gater effect
  • Retrigger effect

These are some of the plentiful effects which are on offer in Glitch 2. The three I have picked out are my favourite ones and allow for clever sound effects to be melded into the file. Rather than explain them, let me demonstrate. The click between the buttons to hear the original sample and then the sample added.

Presets Available in Glitch 2

Above I've demonstrated some of the presets but the full list can be seen below. Further more you can solo them off (clicking the S button) or generating a random selection of patterns by hitting the dice.

The dice randomiser can be done per effect, or at the top of the screen for the whole plugin. The plugin can also be switched on and off using an automation lane on your DAW or by mapping a midi entry in the plugin main window. This will vary between DAW's but the instruction manual is very good to cover all eventualities.

Alternatives Available to Glitch

While Glitch 2 is a multi effect plugin offering a selection of FX, you can create the various effects within the plugin separately. For example, to get a distortion effect you could use the JST Pixelator plugin for bit crushing styles. A reverse effect is simple to apply in a section of your mix by sampling the sound and flipping. This is very easy to do in products such as Bitwig Studio or Ableton Live.

Where can I use Glitch 2 in my mix?

You can fit this plugin in pretty much anywhere on your mix depending on the effect you are aiming for. In my productions I have found the plugin very useful for adding interest to an otherwise repetitive or tedious section of a track.

Can I map midi with Glitch 2?

Automation is possible with Glitch 2 and you can use midi controllers within either the plugin itself or within the DAW to control the various midi control commands.
